White Dragon Spring

White Dragon Spring is located at the foot of Longma Mountain, about 10 kilometers northeast of Zhoucheng in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, approximately 3 kilometers from the town. With picturesque scenery and a tranquil, elegant atmosphere, it is one of the famous scenic spots in Yuxi City and a key cultural relic protection unit in Yunnan Province. The site consists of the White Dragon Temple, White Dragon Spring, Immortal Cave, and a lush forest covering an area of about 200,000 square meters. The existing White Dragon Temple at White Dragon Spring in Zhoucheng, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, has four levels and three courtyards. The front section is called the Inverted Terrace Tower, which features a stage above and a pool carved out beneath it, with side rooms on both sides. The second hall is called the Dragon Hall; the third is the Hall of Unity of Two Teachings; and the rear hall is the Guanyin Hall. In the past, each hall had statues of the White Dragon and various deities, but most have been destroyed. Only a sandalwood-carved “White Dragon Deity” remains, placed in the Dragon Hall. The White Dragon Spring in Zhoucheng, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, is a clear spring that gushes out from a fissure in the mountainside of Longma Mountain. It cascades down along the rocky cliff and flows through the ravine, creating the illusion of water flowing uphill. The Immortal Cave is located a few hundred meters northwest of White Dragon Pool in Zhoucheng, Yuxi City, in a cliffside on the mountainside, extending over 50 meters deep.

Legend has it that in ancient times, in Shangshantou Village, there was a beautiful and intelligent girl from the Ruan family. She was diligent and clever from a young age, taking care of both household and field chores. At that time, Shangshantou lacked water, so all the drinking water for the family had to be fetched by the Ruan girl from White Dragon Pool. One day after the rain, while carrying water up the slope, she slipped. Fortunately, a young farmer behind her caught her, preventing her from falling and spilling the water. After that, the girl often saw this young man working in the fields as she fetched water from White Dragon Pool. Through conversation, she learned he was surnamed Bai and lived nearby. One night, the Ruan girl dreamed that the young man told her: the next day, at the place where she grazed the cattle, she would see a white sheep fighting a black sheep, and if she struck the black sheep with a whip, the white sheep would win. The next day, as the two sheep were locked in fierce combat, the girl arrived with her whip. With two cracks of the whip, the black sheep fell to the ground. A few days later, the young man came to the Ruan family to propose marriage. The elders were ready to agree, but faced the dilemma of who would fetch the water once the girl was married. When this problem was raised, the young man promised that upon their wedding, he would ensure the mother always had drinking water. On the wedding day, the groom rode a horse whose long tail dragged along the ground, carving out a channel from White Dragon Pool to Shangshantou. Clear spring water flowed along this channel all the way to the doorstep of the Ruan girl’s home. Later, people used this water to irrigate their crops. It turned out that the young man was actually the little white dragon of White Dragon Pool in disguise.
