Sanbanxi Lake Scenic Area

The Sanbanxi Hydropower Station is situated in Jinping County, on the Qingjiang River, an upstream section of the Yuan River mainstream. It is 434 km from Guiyang, the provincial capital, 220 km from Kaili, the capital of Qiandongnan Prefecture, 164 km from the nationally renowned historical and cultural city of Zhenyuan, and 18 km from Liping Airport. Accessible via National Highway 320 and provincial roads, it is centrally located among the eight scenic areas of Liping, including the Bazhou River, the ancient banyan trees of Rongjiang, the Wuyang River, and the Jianhe scenic spots, making transportation very convenient.

The Sanbanxi Lake area spans 63 square kilometers. It is a scenic zone characterized by lush greenery and a superior ecological environment, integrating mountain and water landscapes, ethnic customs, and historical culture. Major attractions include the scenery of the Sanbanxi Reservoir area, the 50,000-mu natural grassland and ninety-nine natural pools of Qingshanjie, the northern Dong ethnic culture of Pingqiu and Yaobai, the Miao village culture of Wendou, Sha’ao, and Yaoguang, as well as the blue flagstone culture.

The Sanbanxi Lake Scenic Area is a unique tourist destination created by a large-scale water conservancy project, featuring the spectacular sight of a vast “heavenly jade pool” nestled between towering gorges. The dam of the Sanbanxi Hydropower Station stands at 185.5 meters high, ranking as the second tallest in China and the third tallest in the world. The lake boasts navigable waterways extending up to 120 kilometers, and the artificially formed 85-square-kilometer lake surface has made the once-remote, high-mountain Miao and Dong villages, rare primeval vegetation, and cool climate easily accessible. This has resulted in a rare comprehensive tourist destination that combines sightseeing, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, cultural tourism, cruise tourism, and resort vacations. Other power stations constructed simultaneously include the Guazhi Hydropower Station, 12 kilometers from Sanbanxi, and the Baishi Hydropower Station, 45 kilometers from Guazhi. Together, these three hydropower stations divide the 200-kilometer-long section of the Qingjiang River within Qiandongnan Prefecture—from Baishi to Geding—into three segments, creating three lake areas all located within Jinping County, forming a magnificent landscape of three rivers and three lakes.
