Ancient Alleys of Zhenyuan
The alleys of Zhenyuan are as tranquil as Beijing’s hutongs but without their rigid uniformity; they have the picturesque charm of water towns in the south, yet lack their flat, level layouts; they resemble Chongqing’s "mountain alleys" in style, but without the hustle and bustle of urban life. In short, climbing slopes and navigating twists and turns are inevitable results of adapting to the terrain; alleys within alleys, alleys with wells, and channels beneath alleys serve drainage needs; alleys that face docks and connect to ancient post roads reflect the presence of a commercial civilization.
