Wuyang River

The Wuyang River is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Wuyang Scenic Area is one of the ten major scenic zones of the national-level Wuyang River Scenic Area, located between Shibing County and Zhenyuan County in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. It covers a planned area of 121 square kilometers and features 33 scenic spots. Sightseeing is mainly done by boat or on foot, with densely scattered, picturesque and majestic attractions.

The scenic area is dominated by high gorges and flat lakes, cascading waterfalls and springs, and karst landscapes; the interplay of mountain hues and water views is enchanting. “Reunited Mirror,” half submerged in water and half jutting out, presents a striking sight; pairs of mandarin ducks play in the water, deeply affectionate; the marvelous three-tiered waterfall and “pearls dropping onto a jade plate” cascade directly into the deep pool; the “Calling Spring” responds magically to shouts—water gushes when called and stops when silent; the stone peaks resemble a “peacock spreading its tail,” incredibly lifelike; “Master and Disciples of the Monkey King” venture into the mysterious valley, taking a moment of leisure amid their journey—the entire scenic zone offers a painting at every bend and a view at every step, captivating visitors who find it hard to leave... The mysterious Lower Wuyang, though not heaven, is more exquisite than heaven. Its distinctive charm moves the heart mainly because Lower Wuyang possesses the grandeur of the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges, the elegance of Mount Emei in Sichuan, the beauty of Guilin’s Li River, and the serenity of Yangshuo’s scenic spots, earning fame across the land.

All who have visited Lower Wuyang praise its valleys, mountain colors, and waterscapes as matchless wonders of the world, leaving them in awe. The Qing Dynasty patriotic general Lin Zexu once left a famous poem here:

Two mountains clamp the stream, the waters fierce,

One autumn mist drills the mountain's base.

Travelers cast shadows in the stream, while the mountains stand by,

Hearts race though bodies haven’t yet fallen.

The renowned lyricist Qiao Yu, during his visit to Zhenyuan’s Wuyang River, couldn’t help but compose an impromptu poem on the cruise:

I’ve also floated light boats on Wuyang River,

Where verdant hills are charming and waters gentle;

Herons sway like tails in reflections,

Dragons seem to rise near the ripples;

There are maidens longing for their husbands,

And soldiers yearning for homebound boats;

It’s hard to say Guilin tops the world,

But let’s liken the Three Gorges as its equal.

Transportation

1. The Hunan-Guizhou Railway passes through here. You can take a train from Guiyang to Zhenyuan Station, which takes about 5 hours, but not all trains stop here; alternatively, you can take a long-distance bus from Guiyang Bus Station to Zhenyuan, with a fare of 43 RMB.

2. From Yuping to Zhenyuan, you can take a minibus for 15 RMB/person, with a 2-hour ride.

3. From Kaili to Zhenyuan, fares range from 20–30 RMB/person, taking about 3 hours. Buses are available after 7:00 am and around 2:00 pm.

4. From Zhenyuan to Tiexi, take the battery-powered vehicle from Zhusheng Temple in Zhenyuan, with a fare of 6 RMB and a ride of about 20 minutes.

There are no local buses. Taxis start at 3 RMB; 3 RMB is enough to go anywhere in town.
