Hongfu Temple Scenic Area:
Hongfu Temple is a key cultural relic protection unit of Guizhou Province and is listed as one of the nationally important open temples announced by the State Council. Nestled in a mountain hollow embraced by Zhàngbō Peak, Bǎotǎ Peak, and Xiàngwáng Peak of Qianling Mountain, the temple features elegantly structured halls that are solemn and rustic, with winding railings, long corridors, expansive cloisters, and a meticulously arranged layout that is ancient and serene. Major structures include the Fahua Pagoda, the Nine-Dragon Bathing the Buddha stone wall, the Grand Mountain Gate, the Bell and Drum Towers, the Heavenly King Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Jade Buddha Hall, the Scripture Depository, the Dharma Hall, the Guest Hall, the Shuāngguì Tower, the Abbot’s Garden, the Stele Corridor, the Five Contemplations Hall, the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, and the Vegetarian Fragrance Dining Hall, among 72 buildings of various sizes. Including the liberation pond and tea house, the site covers an area of 11,433 square meters.
In the 11th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1672), Monk Chisong traveled to the area, built a hut in the mountains, and subsequently raised funds to construct this temple. In the early years of the Republic of China, it served as the headquarters of the Guizhou Buddhist Association. Hongfu Temple preserves a number of precious historical relics and cultural artifacts: first, the Nine-Turn Path (commonly known as the 24 literary turns) pioneered by Chisong; second, the Ancient Buddha Cave visited by Xu Xiake; third, the Fahua Pagoda standing prominently to the right front outside the mountain gate; fourth, the Memorial Pagoda of Chisong, the founding abbot, and the stupa forest of successive abbots; fifth, a stele corridor inscribed with poems written by over a hundred individuals including - and -; sixth, the Tripitaka bestowed by the Qing Qianlong court; seventh, the twelve-volume Qianling Mountain Records compiled by Chisong; eighth, the Ming Chenghua bronze bell hanging in the Bell Tower; and ninth, the sculptures of Five Hundred Arhats.
With the care and attention of provincial and municipal governments, support from all sectors of society, and the backing of monastic and lay followers, the temple has not only been revitalized and enhanced in spiritual radiance but also expanded with new constructions, presenting a more majestic and solemn atmosphere. It has become a grand and dignified Chan (Zen) monastery of the Linji school in Guizhou Province, known for its pure monastic discipline.
