Introduction: The Hanging Armor Mountain Stone Carvings are located on Hanging Armor Mountain, about a mile south of Ji County in Shanxi Province. Nestled against the scenic Jinping Mountain and overlooking the clear Qingshui River, the area features willows lining the cliffs and an arched bridge resembling a rainbow, creating picturesque surroundings. According to local chronicles, General Yuchi Gong of the Tang Dynasty once stayed here while on a military campaign and hung his armor on Jinping Mountain, after which it was renamed Hanging Armor Mountain. Another legend says that Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty and Qin Shubao once hung their armor atop the mountain on their way to Chang’an, hence the name. In the third year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (583 AD), five sections of Buddhist statues were carved into the stone cliffs at the foot of the mountain, each section containing two to three niches. The niches are flame-shaped, mostly housing one Buddha and two Bodhisattvas. The bases of the niches are shaped like inverted lotus petals on a Sumeru pedestal, with Bodhisattva attendants on either side. Among them, one niche depicts a reclining Buddha, with his right hand supporting his cheek and left knee slightly bent, showcasing vivid modeling and a serene expression. The carving technique combines relief carving with line engraving, presenting a unique style compared to the round sculptures found in other grottoes.
