Kannaipo

Kannaipo is a cultural relic protection unit of Shanxi Province.

Located 30 kilometers northwest of Ji County, on the eastern bank of Yuantou in the Jin-Shaan Gorge of the middle reaches of the Yellow River, east of the Hukou Waterfall, Kannaipo borders the Yellow River to the west, connects to Guxian Gully to the north, reaches Makuzhang to the south, and links to Nancun Plateau to the east. Stretching about one kilometer from east to west and about 0.5 kilometers from north to south, it is a gourd-shaped, independent mountain ridge surrounded by ravines and rivers on three sides and connected to the plateau on one side, truly a strategic pass where a single brave guard could hold off thousands. From 1940 to 1945, the headquarters of Yan Xishan’s Second War Zone Command, the Shanxi Provincial Government, and the National Revolutionary Comrades Association were stationed here. Because the name “Nancun” sounded similar to “Nan Cun” (difficult to survive), and to symbolize overcoming adversity, Yan Xishan renamed it “Kannaicheng” (City of Overcoming Hardship), commonly referred to as Kannaipo.
