Jiawa Xiangyang Temple

Xiangyang Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

Xiangyang Temple, located in Jiawa Township along National Highway 227, is a key stop on the route to Yunnan and Daocheng Yading, and lies 30 kilometers from Litang County. The temple was first built in 1403 and belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

On June 3, 1936, Xiao Ke and Wang Zhen led the Sixth Red Army Corps to join forces with the 32nd Army of the Fourth Red Army Front at Xiangyang Temple in Jiawa Township, Litang County. They were welcomed by the monks and local people of Xiangyang Temple and stayed there for 33 days. The temple’s monks helped gather a supply of grain for the Red Army. On the site, the 32nd Army held a mass meeting and established the Jiawa Bopa Government, composed of eight members, each of whom received an official appointment certificate issued by the Red Army. On July 6, the Red Army continued their northward march, passing through Litang County and being welcomed by the Changqingqingke Monastery. During the Long March, the Red Army spent 46 days within the boundaries of Litang County.
