Introduction

On the stone wall to the right of the Great Buddha, there is a perilous plank walkway that spirals down from above to the foot of the Buddha. This is the famous "Nine-Bend Plank Walkway," which was carved at the same time as the statue was built. The "Transformation Scene" carving at the first bend of the walkway is exquisitely detailed, vivid in imagery, and graceful in line, featuring depictions of pavilions, towers, and other structures. It is a precious resource for studying Tang Dynasty architecture and stone carving art.
