Hui Lan Pagoda

Hui Lan Pagoda is a cultural tourism attraction.

Hui Lan Pagoda is located on the terrace at the confluence of the Minjiang River and Shouxi River behind the government office of Xuan Kou Town, Wenchuan County. The nine-story, closely-eaved brick pagoda faces from southeast to northwest. Both the base and the body of the pagoda are hexagonal in shape, coated with white lime plaster. The base slightly tapers inward from top to bottom, with a bottom side length of 2.6 meters and a height of 6.5 meters. An arched doorway is located on the southwest side, standing 2.4 meters tall and 0.80 meters wide.

The pagoda has nine tiers of closely-spaced eaves that taper inward from the bottom up. Each tier’s eaves are cantilevered outward using corbelled brickwork, and the height of each level decreases progressively from bottom to top. Each face of every level features a small arched window at the center. The top is crowned with a hexagonal spire. The pagoda is 21 meters in total height. The interior wall of the first level bears an inscription: “Constructed under the decree of Yao Chuidian by Mo Xunzhao and Kan Xing Gou Hanzhang, with craftsman Xie Yinchang. Established in the 24th year of the Daoguang reign (1844) of the Qing Dynasty.”

The *Guangxian County Annals* also record that Hui Lan Pagoda “was built by the Qing scholar Yao Qinglan.” Hui Lan Pagoda is a feng shui pagoda and one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Xuan Kou Town. It is a municipal-level cultural heritage protection site.
