Luobuzhai
The Wenchuan Luobuzhai Cultural Eco-Tourism Area is located 150 kilometers from Chengdu, the provincial capital, and 18 kilometers from Wenchuan County. It lies on the southern bank of the Minjiang River in Yanting Township, Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, along the Jiuhuan Line, at an altitude of 1,970 meters on a high-altitude plateau. The scenic area consists of the old village of Luobuzhai, the new village, Xiaozhai Village, and Suoqiao Village. It is the largest and oldest earthen Qiang village discovered in the world to date, known as the “Street on the Clouds” and the “Ancient Capital of the Qiang Kings.” It is a purely Qiang-inhabited settlement. Luobuzhai is built on a glaciofluvial stepped plateau with flat and broad terrain, making it the largest flatland on the high-altitude plateau of the Minjiang Grand Canyon and the most ideal spot to overlook the scenery of the canyon.
Luobuzhai has a long history and unique geographical features. Archaeologists say that humans have lived here as early as 3,000–4,000 years ago; geologists describe the yellow earth in the middle of the Minjiang Grand Canyon as seeming otherworldly; and folk legends are rich, colorful, and touching. The four major name changes of Luobuzhai (originally called Fenghuangzhai (Phoenix Village), later Fushunzhai (Prosperous Peace Village), then Laohuzhai (Tiger Village), and finally the current Luobuzhai) are a testament to its long history. Nestled between Fengshan (Phoenix Mountain) and Huangshan (Phoenix Mountain), the entire architectural layout of Luobuzhai resembles a phoenix about to take flight.
Location: It is less than ten kilometers from Wenchuan County to Luobuzhai. Just past the famous Yanting Pass, a Qiang watchtower standing beside National Highway 317 and an ancient beacon tower mark the entrance to Luobuzhai. Along the ten-kilometer mountain road that winds uphill, the first village you see is Suoqiao Village, followed by Xiaozhai Village, and finally you arrive at Luobuzhai.
Honors: Known as the “Street on the Clouds,” “Ancient Capital of the Qiang Kings,” and “China’s Largest and Oldest Earthen Qiang Village,” Luobuzhai is the largest and oldest earthen Qiang village discovered in the world to date.
