Yingxiu Earthquake Site

The epicenter of the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake, the Yingxiu Earthquake Site is located at the mouth of Niuxian Gully above Baihua Bridge in Yingxiu Town, stretching from Lianhuaxin to Caijiagang Village in Xuan Kou Town. The earthquake site mainly consists of the Sky-Dropping Rock, Baihua Bridge, and Xuan Kou Middle School. It was here that the Wenchuan Earthquake began tearing the earth apart, accompanied by terrifying roars, as several million cubic meters of rock fragments cascaded down steep cliffs, creating a massive rock flow that zigzagged through valleys and struck both sides of the gullies, forming a nearly 3-kilometer-long rock flow and nine mountain impact surfaces — a source landscape of the quake. The original Niuxian Gully was instantly raised by 30 meters. At the entrance of Yingxiu Town in Wenchuan County stands a huge stone inscribed with the bold characters “5.12 Epicenter Yingxiu,” which are particularly eye-catching. This boulder rolled down from a collapsed mountainside during the earthquake and has now become an iconic landmark of the epicenter. The Yingxiu Earthquake Site is designated as a “Special 5A-Level Scenic Area.”
