Rhino Sea

Rhino Sea is one of the lakes in Jiuzhaigou with the most varied scenery, and its beautiful reflections are considered the finest among all the lakes.

Introduction

Rhino Sea is located in the Shuzheng Valley scenic area at an altitude of 2,315 meters, with a vast water surface, making it the second largest lake in Jiuzhaigou after Changhai Lake. At the northern end of the lake is a reed marsh, from which you can overlook the Goddess Mountain of Semo; the southern exit features both woods and a silver waterfall, while the middle is dominated by a large expanse of intoxicatingly blue lake water. The hazy clouds and the reflections of red leaves and green trees on the deep blue water create a scene that is both surreal and incredibly beautiful. Rowboats can be rented on the lake, making it the only place in Jiuzhaigou where water-based activities are offered.

Legend has it that in ancient times, a severely ill Tibetan elder—riding a rhinoceros—passed through this area. After drinking the lake’s water, he miraculously recovered. The elder then drank from the lake day and night, unwilling to leave, and eventually rode his rhinoceros into the lake, settling there permanently. Hence, the lake came to be known as Rhino Sea.

Photography Tips:

If you enter the wooden boardwalk and pass by Rhino Sea, the dense tree cover may obstruct your view and prevent you from capturing good reflections. It is recommended to hike along the road from Ping’an Bridge. The best time for photography is between 7:30 and 9:00 AM, when the water is calm and still.
