Mount Luofu Qiang Kings’ City

Mount Luofu, also known as Floating Mountain, is located in the central-southern section of the Longmen Mountain Range, 2 kilometers from Sangzao Town in An County, 10 kilometers from Anchang Town, and 40 kilometers from Mianyang. Covering a total area of 3 square kilometers, it is a low-mountain eco-tourism area that is easy to climb. Due to the frequent presence of clouds and mist at its base, the mountain appears to float above the clouds, hence the name “Floating Mountain.” To distinguish it from Guangdong’s Mount Luofu, it is also referred to as Little Luofu or Western Luofu.

Mount Luofu is formed by a range of peaks including the towering Taiyi Peak, Lingxiao Peak, Guayi Peak, Jiahe Peak, Liancheng Peak, Zhuoxi Peak, Shuangfeng Peak, Baiyang Peak, Yingge Peak, Chaoyun Peak, Taizi Peak, Changjian Peak, and several accompanying peaks, creating a magnificent and colorful natural landscape. The mountain features steep terrain, abrupt cliffs, caves, canyons, and divine springs scattered throughout. Luofu combines grandeur, beauty, danger, serenity, and mystery. The mountain is shaded by dense forests, offering a tranquil and elegant environment with pleasant weather all year round. Historical figures such as the Qing Dynasty literary talent Li Diaoyuan from Mianzhou and modern writer Sha Ting have left behind numerous inscriptions praising Mount Luofu. Scenes from the TV series "Journey to the West," such as the “Three Strikes Against White Bone Demon” and “Lion Camel Ridge,” were filmed here. Renowned for its magic and beauty, the mountain is often called “Little Western Paradise,” “Little Bonsai,” or “The Finest in Bashu.”

Mount Luofu Qiang Kings’ City is situated on the mountainside, covering a total area of 1 square kilometer. It is surrounded on the south, north, and west sides by sheer natural rock cliffs. Within the city, there are military and daily life facilities such as a general’s platform, a drill ground, stone barracks gates, and small grain storage fortresses, along with four well-preserved small stone gates. This site is a true representation of an ancient battlefield from the Ming Zhengde era (1506–1521), where the Qiang people resisted the Zhu Ming Dynasty. It serves as both a historical reflection of ethnic relations and a vivid lesson in promoting national unity. Recently, to adapt to new developments in tourism, meet visitors' aesthetic needs, and create a better travel environment, Sichuan Tourism Resources Development Research Center was commissioned to organize experts and scholars in re-planning the tourism development of the Mount Luofu Scenic Area. The plan highlights the fairyland characteristics of “Buddhism in the front mountain, Taoism in the back mountain,” emphasizes Qiang ethnic history and culture, and restores architectural landscapes such as official fortresses, settlements, watchtowers, plank roads, and pavilions.
