Biti Site (First Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Sites)

Era: Neolithic

Location: West bank of Zhang River, Biti Village, Xiaochang Township, about 10 km northwest of Changzhi City

The site's surface is scattered with a large number of pottery shards, covering an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. In 1956, a survey revealed that on the exposed cliff west of Biti Village, there were gray clay-sand mixed cord-marked and combed-pattern pottery shards. Artifacts collected include the rims of li tripods, leg parts of ding tripods, stone axes, stone sickles, stone knives, and other human-use items and stone tools used in production. These findings indicate the site belongs to the Longshan culture type of the Neolithic Age.

In the summer of 1985, another site was discovered west of Xiaoshen Village. In 1986, trial excavations were carried out, uncovering two ancient residential house foundations and several Han Dynasty tombs, along with a large number of pottery shards and some burial objects. Comprehensive analysis suggests that, in addition to the Longshan culture type, the site also includes cultural elements from the Xia, Shang, and Zhou periods.
