Longlong Mountain Scenic Area

Longlong Mountain Scenic Area is located in Gongping Town, Fengjie County, Chongqing, 75 kilometers from Yunyang and 60 kilometers from the new county seat of Fengjie. It is a renowned Taoist destination in eastern Chongqing, often hailed as the "Wudang of Sichuan." Legend has it that in the year 249 AD, Qin Shi Huang struck the “Long Dragon” with his whip in Shaanxi, causing it to land here. Its winding ridges resemble the body of a proud dragon, hence the name Longlong Mountain. The area features widely known sites with rich legends and long histories such as Tianxian Temple, Sedan Roof Mountain, Lady’s Shoe Dam, and Cock-Crowing Shop. It is a sacred place for worshippers and also an excellent spot for tourists to relax and admire the rural landscape. It has been listed as a county-level scenic area. The Longlong Mountain Scenic Area spans a total of 2,500 mu, receiving 150,000 visitors per year and generating nearly 2 million yuan in total tourism income.

Longlong Mountain is a thriving center of Taoism with bustling incense offerings. It is a nationally recognized Taoist base, attracting worshippers from far and wide. “A spiritual journey beyond the mundane, with peaks on all sides and waters on two fronts; a celestial structure formed eight parts by human hands and two by heaven.” This is an ancient couplet inscribed at the gate of Tianxian Temple on Longlong Mountain, vividly depicting the area’s terrain and architectural style. Indeed, Tianxian Temple on Longlong Mountain is a heavenly abode resembling a celestial palace.

Longlong Mountain originates from the Qinling Mountains and is an extension of the Daba Mountains. According to folklore, the mountain was once part of the Qinling range, which Qin Shi Huang attempted to drive overnight into the sea in order to block the Qutang Gorge of the Three Gorges. To save humanity from disaster, Guanyin Bodhisattva crowed like a rooster to stop him. Hearing the crow, an enraged Qin Shi Huang struck the mountain with his whip, causing it to halt and leaving behind remnants such as “Dragon-Slaying Pass” and “Cock-Crowing Shop.” Stretching for dozens of kilometers, Longlong Mountain features a slender, steep, and winding ridge that resembles a swimming dragon, with cliffs and precipices marking where the dragon appears to raise its head. Viewed from the dragon’s head, two streams wind around the mountain while surrounding peaks stand in tribute, framed by verdant pine trees and rustling forests, evoking the image of four mountains paying homage. After rain, when clouds and mist enshroud the peak, it looks as if the dragon is rising through the clouds, almost breaking through the sky—a spectacular sight in eastern Chongqing. In 1997, it was officially designated as the “Longlong Mountain Scenic Area” by the Fengjie County People's Government.
