The Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a science education base, a classic red tourism destination, a patriotic education base, and a national defense education base.

The Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall is located in the western suburbs of Jijiang District, Chongqing, China, 43 kilometers from downtown Chongqing. It is a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base, a AAAA-level tourist attraction (site), and a Chongqing National Defense Education Base. Nestled against green hills and facing the Yangtze River, it boasts convenient transportation and beautiful scenery.

The memorial hall is located in the western part of Jijiang City, Chongqing, nestled against green hills and conveniently accessible via expressways and first-class highways. It lies 43 kilometers from downtown Chongqing and faces the Yangtze River.

The hall was planned, designed, and constructed simultaneously with the first phase of Jiangjin's Aiping Mountain Park, covering a total area of 105 mu (including 30 mu of water surface). On April 1, 1998, with the care and support of the former Office of Marshal Nie, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and the municipal governments of Chongqing and Jiangjin, the construction project commenced after more than a year of meticulous preparation. It was ceremoniously inaugurated at the foot of the majestic Ding Mountain in the suburban area.

Attractions

The Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall consists of the main building and the bronze statue square, covering an area of about 20 mu. The spacious and flat bronze statue square features two large relief sculptures on either side, with the bronze statue of Marshal Nie standing tall in the center. The 1.2-kilometer road, over 30 mu of green space, and numerous light installations from the first phase of Aiping Mountain Park enhance the beautiful and picturesque environment of the memorial hall. The main building displays nearly 300 photographs, over 400 cultural relics and historical materials, and nearly 100 calligraphy and paintings created by party and state leaders as well as renowned artists. Additionally, it houses a collection of over 3,000 photographs, hundreds of cultural relics, over 500 calligraphy and paintings by famous artists, and nearly 10,000 books from Marshal Nie’s personal collection. The hall also features over 40 audiovisual models, including advanced domestic weaponry displayed during the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Long March series of rockets, and various artificial satellites. Notably, the satellite launch simulation demonstration uses a large sand table and integrated sound, light, and electrical effects to recreate the scene at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, showcasing the satellite launch process and the flight attitudes of rockets and satellites in space, providing an immersive experience.

The parking area within the site is spacious, with separate lanes for vehicles and pedestrians. Lush trees, green lawns, blooming flowers, and the shimmering lake blend harmoniously with the monuments and gardens, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

Bronze Statue Square

The bronze statue square is divided into upper and lower levels, covering a total area of 6,600 square meters, offering a broad view and a majestic atmosphere. The bronze statue of Marshal Nie Rongzhen stands proudly in the center of the upper square, measuring 4 meters in height and 7 meters including the base. The base is inscribed with the five golden characters “Marshal Nie” handwritten by the General Secretary. The square will also feature some heavy-duty weaponry, which will positively contribute to attracting visitors for national defense education.

Main Building

The main building has a construction area of 3,647 square meters and consists of the Hall of Reverence, the Exhibition Hall, the simulated office and bedroom of Marshal Nie, the China Satellite Launch Demonstration Hall, and the Visitor Reception Center. The exhibition halls are spacious with smooth layouts, featuring over 200 vivid photos, a rich collection of cultural relics, detailed historical materials, and over 40 models of national defense technological achievements, as well as a Xichang Satellite Launch demonstration model. These elements collectively showcase the great contributions of Marshal Nie to China’s revolution and construction. It serves as an important base for patriotic education, revolutionary tradition, science popularization, and national defense education.

Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall

The exhibition layout of the Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall is unique compared to similar memorial halls. It is characterized by a large number of exhibits, including over 40 models showcasing China’s high-end, precision, and cutting-edge national defense technological achievements. It also incorporates a high level of technology, extensively using audio, visual, and lighting effects to enable many exhibits to have demonstration functions. Three computers (one of which is a touchscreen) allow visitors to freely access and explore information about Marshal Nie’s life, all of which provide an eye-opening experience and educate visitors on patriotism, revolutionary tradition, science knowledge, and national defense awareness.

The China Satellite Launch Demonstration is the most spectacular part of the Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall’s exhibition. Covering an area of 413 square meters and standing 10.2 meters high, it can accommodate 250 visitors at a time. The satellite launch demonstration simulates the scene at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, using a terrain sand table and integrated computer, audio, visual, and lighting effects to present the magnificent scene of rocket and satellite launches, offering visitors an immersive experience.

Service Area

The memorial hall has reliable communication facilities, with IC card and timed public telephones available at the entrance and inside the hall, ensuring seamless mobile coverage. Postal services are also convenient, with dedicated counters for commemorative envelopes, stamps, and postcards, allowing visitors to send mail.

The memorial hall is fully equipped with comprehensive facilities, and its tourism service functions are continuously improving. It includes a convenience store, dining area, accommodation, and entertainment facilities. The dining area can serve 80–100 people at a time, while the accommodation offers 20 standard rooms, 1 triple room, and 4 single rooms. To facilitate events organized by groups, there are one large and one small meeting room, both capable of hosting small and medium-sized conferences. The meeting rooms are fully equipped with air conditioning, sound systems, televisions, and telephones.

The Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall is an important base for patriotic education, revolutionary tradition, science knowledge, and national defense education. It serves as a significant platform for promoting and advancing the construction of socialist spiritual civilization. Therefore, its establishment and role play a profound political and special practical significance.

Nie Rongzhen (1899–1992), courtesy name Fupian, was born in Jiangjin, Sichuan (now Jiangjin District, Chongqing). He was a renowned Chinese revolutionary, politician, and military strategist. As one of the founders and leaders of the People’s Liberation Army and one of the Ten Marshals of the People’s Republic of China, he made significant contributions to China’s liberation and the modernization of its national defense and military. He lived to the age of 93.
