Located in the Simian Mountain National Key Scenic Area, situated in the southern part of Jiangjin District, Chongqing, and approximately 137 kilometers from downtown Chongqing.

Wangxiangtai Waterfall is the iconic attraction of Simian Mountain. With a height of 158 meters and a width of 48 meters, it is the most spectacular waterfall in the area—more than twice as high as the famous Huangguoshu Waterfall—and is hailed as the tallest waterfall in China.

The wonder of Wangxiangtai Waterfall in Simian Mountain lies not only in its mighty cascade that seems to plunge from the heavens, with thunderous roars that shake the mountains and valleys, but also in the breathtaking rainbows formed on clear days when sunlight refracts through the mist, creating a dreamlike bridge of colors across the valley. On summer days with clear skies, this rainbow can usually be seen between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, making it a truly remarkable sight.

The viewing road for Wangxiangtai Waterfall stretches 3 kilometers, allowing visitors to admire the waterfall from various angles and distances while traveling in their vehicles—from afar and below, gradually moving closer and upward. From a distance, the waterfall appears elusive due to the distance and mountain mist, lending it an ethereal beauty. Up close, the thunderous roar and majestic presence make visitors feel the waterfall’s exuberant energy. Looking up, the cascading waters and roaring spray are overwhelming and awe-inspiring. Viewed from above, the torrential waterfall resembles strands of silver thread spilled from a weaver’s hands, draping down onto the red cliffs as if jade beads were falling into a crimson basin.

Best Viewing Season Edit

The best time to view the waterfall is during summer and autumn. If you choose to visit Simian Mountain to see Wangxiangtai Waterfall during the season when “clear streams reflect the azaleas,”

you will be treated to the sight of vibrant azaleas in red, white, yellow, and purple covering the mountainsides on the western bank of the waterfall—lush, splendid, and dazzlingly beautiful. The mighty silver curtain of the cascading waterfall, described as “endless surging waves,” stands out brilliantly against this floral tapestry. When spring breezes blow, the entire Simian Mountain seems to ripple with waves of blossoms, filling the air with intoxicating fragrance that enchants visitors. Walking among the flowers as they sway around you, with the waterfall descending from the sky and crystal-clear waters surging forward, it’s like a perfectly composed landscape painting. Lost in this world of radiant hues and flowing waters,

you’ll surely be moved to exclaim: “A white silk ribbon flies across the cliff, a jade dragon pours heavenly rain, mist and rosy clouds intoxicate all who roam the valley—lost in nature, I cannot bear to leave.”

Ways to Visit Edit

Option 1: Walk along the plank walkway behind Wangxiangtai Waterfall. As you proceed through the tunnel beneath the waterfall, lean on the railing and look up—the waterfall plunges down like a silver dragon diving into the sea or white silk floating in the air. The thunderous sound fills your ears, and you’ll feel as though your whole body has become part of the rushing flow.

Option 2: Drive to the road opposite the waterfall and stop at the viewing point directly facing the cascade. The view is even more enchanting, and you can also spot an enormous “heart” shape formed by the water and rocks.

Option 3: Visit during a holiday evening around 8:00 PM to witness the unique spectacle of the “Rainbow Waterfall”—a breathtaking sight found nowhere else in China.
