Chongqing Gunziping Forest Park

Chongqing Gunziping Forest Park is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

Gunziping is located in Tanghe Town at the junction of Chongqing and Sichuan in the southwestern part of Jiangjin District, Chongqing. Covering a total area of 25 square kilometers, it is 100 kilometers from downtown Chongqing and can be directly accessed via the Yuhe Expressway. The highest elevation in the scenic area is 916 meters, with cliffs surrounding the entire region. It combines mountains, water, forests, caves, and waterfalls, integrating grandeur, beauty, serenity, danger, and wonder all in one. With a cool climate and stunning scenery, it is favored by scholars and tourists alike, and has been designated as a Chongqing Municipal Scenic Area and a Chongqing Municipal Forest Park.

The flowing cascades of Gunziping Scenic Area are mesmerizing. The main waterfalls in the area include Daoliushui, Jiuchongtian, Shuikoumiao, and 16 others. These waterfalls flow year-round, with the sound of water heard in all seasons. Most are hidden within caves, creating unique waterfall cave worlds.

Yuanyang Lake and Taiping Lake boast shimmering waters and tranquil bays, while the scenic section of the Tanghe River is serene and emerald-green, with a mix of calm and rapid flows, making it an ideal spot for boating and rafting.

The most beautiful area in the scenic zone is Jiulongxi (Nine Dragons Stream), named for the nearby Jiulong Cave. Along the stream are nine waterfalls: Shuikoumiao, Wanglong, Sisters, Jiuchongtian, Shiziyan, Xianfengyan, and Xiaoxiangyan. By the stream are Baiyun Temple, Jiulong Cave, Husband-and-Wife Pines, and the ancient Xiaoxiang Temple. It’s a great place for playing in the water, fishing, photography, sightseeing, and enjoying the scenery.

About 750 meters south of Yuanyang Lake lies Yixiantian (One-Line Sky), where two sheer cliffs stand just a few meters apart, reaching a height of about 10 zhang (approximately 33 feet), forming a long, deep, and narrow gorge.

The Hongyan Dongzhai Cluster is located on the steep Dan cliffs to the west of Gunziping. It consists of over ten cave fortresses, including Baobaozhai, Yong’an Dongzhai, and Baochunchun Zhai, connected by wooden or stone plank walkways. The total length is 5 kilometers. The fortress gates are all engraved with inscriptions, some even marked with construction dates. The walls are built from large bluestones, equipped with complete offensive and defensive structures. Stone tables, chairs, jars, and mills and other living facilities are well-preserved.

On the western edge of Gunziping, within a 1,000-acre valley, over 2,000 Alsophila spinulosa (tree ferns) of various sizes grow in clusters. It is the largest primeval Alsophila community in Chongqing.

Gunziping is home to a rich and lush variety of bamboo, often referred to as the “Bamboo Sea of Eastern Sichuan.” Vast stretches of green bamboo extend for miles. Moso bamboo, water bamboo, flower bamboo, black bamboo, palm bamboo, monk’s head bamboo... all display diverse forms, making it a place where visitors can easily lose themselves and not want to leave.
