Jiangjin Middle School

Jiangjin Middle School is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongqing Municipality.

Chongqing Jiangjin Middle School (JiangjinMiddleSchoolofChongqingCity) is located by the Yangtze River at the foot of Dingshan Mountain and is one of the first key middle schools in Chongqing.

The school was founded in the 32nd year of the Guangxu reign (1906), initially enrolling three classes of junior high school, five classes of higher elementary school, and one class of accelerated normal school. Its curriculum integrated Western learning and emphasized physical education and the arts. Cai Chengyun, the then magistrate of Jiangjin, was the first to donate 300 taels of silver from his official salary, helping raise over 20,000 taels of silver to establish the school. In August of the same year, approval was granted to open a middle school, which was officially named “Guangli Jiangjin Middle School.”

In the first year of the Xuantong reign (1909), the school had nine teachers.

In the second year of the Xuantong reign (1910), the Sichuan Provincial Educational Inspectorate renamed the school “Jiangjin County Middle School,” issuing an official school seal that was put into use on April 22. This date was established as the school’s anniversary.

The Republican Era

In the autumn of the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), the school adopted the new educational system, known as the “6-3-3” system.

In the 27th year of the Republic of China (1938), due to air raid threats, the entire school, including teachers and students, relocated to Youxi in Jiangjin. It returned in 1945.

In the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), the school began offering senior high school education with a three-year program.

In the 31st year of the Republic of China (1942), the school was named Jiangjin County Middle School.

After the Founding of the People’s Republic of China

On November 28, 1949, Jiangjin was liberated, and the People's Government took over Jiangjin Middle School.

In 1953, a new campus site was added on Guanpo Hill west of the county town, covering an area of 105,700 square meters (referred to as the “new division,” while the original site was called the “main division”). The total area of school grounds reached 139,700 square meters, making it one of the largest middle schools in Sichuan Province at the time in terms of land area.

In March 1953, the Sichuan Provincial Government renamed the school Sichuan Jiangjin No. 1 Middle School.

In the second half of 1953, the Sichuan Provincial Education Department designated Jiangjin No. 1 Middle School as a provincial key school (one of 14 in the province).

In early 1954, the Chongqing Municipal Government allocated special funds to construct a new teaching area at the foot of Dingshan Mountain west of the city (now at No. 816 Nangan Road; the original site is now the faculty residential area).

In 1955, some classes of the school began holding lessons at the new location.

In 1960, the Sichuan Provincial Government decided to retain only three provincial key middle schools: Chengdu No. 4 Middle School (now Shishi Middle School), Jiangjin No. 1 Middle School, and Chongqing No. 3 Middle School (now Chongqing Nankai Middle School).

During the Cultural Revolution, the school suffered severe disruption and damage.

In 1980, the school was re-designated as a provincial key middle school. In the same year, the buildings previously occupied by a smelting plant were reclaimed to construct a lecture theater and an administrative building, adding 995 square meters in floor space. The main campus was reinstated, along with the construction of a Martyrs’ Memorial Monument and a plaque inscribed with Marshal Nie Rongzhen’s calligraphy.

In the second half of 1984, the school was renamed Sichuan Jiangjin County Middle School.

In the 1990s, with increased national investment in education, over 5 million yuan was allocated to build a second teaching building covering 5,000 square meters and a boys' dormitory building spanning 4,100 square meters. A canteen and girls’ apartment complex were also completed, covering 4,500 square meters. Additionally, a comprehensive building and a standard swimming pool were constructed, with floor spaces of 4,700 square meters and 3,200 square meters, respectively.

In 1997, after Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government, the school was renamed Chongqing Jiangjin Middle School.

In 1998, the school was approved as a demonstration high school construction unit.

In 1999, the school was designated as one of the first key middle schools in Chongqing.

In 2000, the school invested 1.2 million yuan to construct the Fangji Teaching Building, covering 3,780 square meters. Multimedia systems and 29-inch color TVs were installed in every classroom, enabling internet access in all classrooms. Multiple language labs and computer rooms were built, and the campus network and closed-circuit television system were upgraded.

In 2002, 8 million yuan was raised to build a 2,300-square-meter gymnasium and an 8,500-square-meter student dormitory complex.

In 2003, the school passed the evaluation to become a Chongqing Municipal Model High School.
