Feng Baiju Memorial Pavilion

The Feng Baiju Memorial Pavilion is a key revolutionary memorial building under the protection of Hainan Province, as well as a patriotic education base and a youth revolutionary tradition education base in Haikou City. It is located within Haikou People's Park at No. 2 Gongyuan Road, Haikou City. The managing authority is the Haikou Municipal Gardening and Landscaping Bureau.

The memorial pavilion was completed in February 1989 and covers an area of 7.2 mu. It consists of a main pavilion and two smaller pavilions, connected in the middle by a corridor. It faces south and is built entirely of granite. The central structure is the main pavilion, flanked by two hexagonal side pavilions. Between the three pavilions, 14-meter-long corridors are built on both sides to form an arc shape. Twenty meters directly in front of the main pavilion, 13 large granite stones are arranged to sculpt five mountain peaks, symbolizing the majestic Wuzhi Mountain, with the central peak featuring a carved bust of General Feng Baiju. Below the five peaks, there is a two-tiered circular base. The bottom tier has a diameter of 21.6 meters, and the upper tier is embedded in the center of the lower one, with a diameter of 12 meters. The green lawn represents the “oasis” in the sea—Hainan Island—while the “island” features the image of Wuzhi Mountain in its center. At the center of the back of the base beneath the peaks lies the ashes of General Feng Baiju, covered with a black marble slab. Above it is an uncrowned bust of Feng Baiju, and below it is inscribed: “Feng Baiju (1903–1973), an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a loyal soldier of the Chinese people, a tested proletarian revolutionary, and ‘a banner of the people of Qiong Ya.’”

Below the statue of Feng Baiju are inscribed the words “General Feng Baiju,” written by Deng Xiaoping. The horizontal lintel above the front of the main pavilion is inscribed with “Feng Baiju Memorial Pavilion,” written by Wang Zhen. On the central wall inside the pavilion is engraved the “Biography of Feng Baiju,” established by the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Government of Hainan Province. On each side is a relief carving: the left one depicts the heroic image of the Qiong Ya revolutionary armed forces holding out on the isolated island for “twenty-three years with the red flag never falling”; the right one shows the scene of the Liberation Army crossing the sea to liberate Hainan and the victorious meeting with the Qiong Ya Column. The wall of the left corridor is engraved with comments about General Feng Baiju by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Guo Moruo; the right corridor wall is engraved with evaluations of the Qiong Ya revolution by Xu Xiangqian, Nie Rongzhen, and Yang Shangkun.

The memorial pavilion is solemn and dignified, surrounded by lush trees. The entire structure is stately, simple, beautiful, and elegant.
