The Qiu Family Ancestral House in Haikou

The Qiu Family Ancestral House in Haikou is a cultural relic protection unit of Hainan Province.

Located at No. 63, Zhongshan Road Old Street, Haikou City, the "Qiu Family Old House" is a cluster of traditional northern Hainan residential buildings from the Qing Dynasty, boasting a history of over 100 years. It is nestled among the arcade buildings with a distinctive Southeast Asian architectural style. The arcades themselves are quite unique, but the Qiu family residence stands out due to its large scale, rigorous layout, and traces of Central Plains cultural heritage, making it a truly exceptional highlight within the old street’s scenery.

The Qiu Family Old House covers an area of more than 1,000 square meters. Originally, the main building had five sections (or “courtyards”), but the fifth was demolished in the second year of the Republic of China (1913) for unknown reasons. Otherwise, the current area would be even larger. The residential plot is over 10 meters wide from east to west, with corridors on both sides that could be used for living, studying, or enjoying tea. Together, the main house and the corridors form three traditional quadrangle courtyards.
