Xiuying Fort

Xiuying Fort is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The site where the plaque inscribed with “Xiuying Fort” was discovered has been identified by archaeological researchers as the original location of the fort’s main gate. Through historical research and testimonies from local elders, the scene of the fort as it appeared 80 years ago comes vividly to life.

Located behind Xiuying Village on the north side of Haixiu Road in Haikou City, the fort comprises five batteries—Gongbei, Zhendong, Dingxi, Zhenwu, and Zhenwei—built in a straight east-west line along a 200-meter-long coastal hill. The gun embrasures face north toward the sea. Two rows of barracks and ammunition depots stand opposite each other, with a large drill ground in between. Towering ancient trees flank the drill ground, creating a lush and vibrant atmosphere. The entire fort complex, including auxiliary structures, covers an area of about 10,000 square meters. Originally built in the 17th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1891 AD), the fort has remained largely intact despite the passage of a century. At the time, it was one of the country’s most renowned coastal forts, ranked alongside Shanghai’s Wusongkou Fort, Tianjin’s Dagu Fort, and Guangdong’s Humen Fort as one of China’s four great forts. It stands as a historical testament to the people of Hainan’s courage and resistance against foreign aggression. In 1985, the Haikou Municipal Government designated the fort as a municipal-level key cultural relics protection unit. In May 2006, it was approved and announced by the State Council as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
