Osmanthus Commune

Osmanthus Commune is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Guilin Osmanthus Commune is located in the core area of the Poetic Peach Blossom Bay Rural Complex in Xiufeng District, Guilin. Covering an area of over 30 acres with a total construction area of more than 16,000 square meters, it consists of four parts: the Osmanthus Culture Experience Hall, the Osmanthus Culture Theme Park, the Under the Osmanthus Tree Theme Hotel, and the multi-functional classrooms of the research and study practice base.

Osmanthus Culture Experience Hall

The welcoming mural is divided into nine layers. The outermost layer uses osmanthus trees as the picture frame, while the inner layers depict the Li River, Elephant Trunk Hill, Xiaoyao Tower, Twin Towers, Jingjiang Prince’s Mansion, and Osmanthus Commune. A top scholar is riding a tall horse, leading a parade with gongs and drums. The natural scenery and cultural landmarks of Guilin are all layered within this single painting. This artistic technique is called “layered color.”

The Osmanthus Vein · A Legacy of Ten Thousand Years

In 2001, carbonized osmanthus seeds were unearthed at the Zengpiyan archaeological site in Guilin. Carbon-14 dating revealed that they are 10,000 years old, making them the oldest existing osmanthus seeds in the world — truly the “No. 1 Osmanthus under Heaven.”

Osmanthus blooms gloriously in autumn, but its flowering period is very short. This immersive experience hall presents a feast for the senses by combining visuals, sound, and scent. A 5D short film tells the story of Guilin’s osmanthus and showcases the city when it is blanketed in blooming osmanthus flowers.

Osmanthus Laurels · The Land of Scholars’ Fortune

Twenty thousand hand-strung osmanthus blossoms create a cascading display that shifts colors throughout the exhibition hall.

Throughout Guilin’s history, a total of eight scholars have achieved the title of Zhuangyuan (top imperial examination scholar). They include Zhao Guanwen and Pei Yue from the Tang Dynasty, Wang Shize and Li Gong (a military Zhuangyuan) from the Northern Song Dynasty, and Chen Jichang (originally named Shourui), Long Qirui, Zhang Jianxun, and Liu Fu Yao from the Qing Dynasty. Among them, one stands out as the most exceptional — Chen Jichang, who achieved the rare feat of “Triple First Place.”

Over the 1,300-year history of China’s imperial examination system, only 13 scholars have ever achieved the Triple First Place honor — a once-in-a-century prodigy. Chen Jichang was the last person in imperial examination history to earn this distinction. (The first place in the provincial exam is called Jieyuan; the first in the metropolitan exam is Huiyuan; and the first in the palace exam is Zhuangyuan.)
