Gwanghan Pavilion

Gwanghan Pavilion is located in Eochon-gil, Namwon, North Jeolla Province, and is a renowned historical site in South Korea. Legend has it that it was built by Huang Xi, a prime minister of the early Joseon Dynasty, and was originally named Gwangtong Pavilion. It was not until its reconstruction in 1434 (the 16th year of King Sejong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty) that it was renamed to its current title. The pavilion was burned down during the Imjin War, a Japanese invasion of Korea in the late 16th century. In 1635 (the 13th year of King Injo’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty) it was rebuilt to its original design. With its exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters, and its splendid architecture, Gwanghan Pavilion is a representative example of traditional Korean gardens. It includes three small islands, stone statues, a magpie bridge, and its overall structure symbolizes the cosmos. Today, large calligraphic plaques inscribed with the characters “Gwanghan Pavilion” and “Gui Guan” hang on the upper floor. Legend has it that the famous classic Korean tale “The Story of Chunhyang” took place here. Chunhyang Pavilion, located to the north of the main building, is a shrine established in 1931 dedicated to Chunhyang. Inside, there is a portrait of Chunhyang. Every year on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month, a memorial ceremony for Chunhyang is held there.
