Yangshuo Lotus Cave

Located 6 kilometers northeast of Xingping Town, Yangshuo County, on the eastern side of Baishandi Village. The cave resembles a bottle—wide inside and narrow outside—with a small entrance. The developed touring section stretches 481 meters. Inside, stalactites and stalagmites abound in diverse shapes, with over a hundred named attractions.

Cave Attractions

Lotus Pond Spectacle: The water surface is covered with 108 cloud basins of varying sizes, resembling lotus leaves, each filled with natural cave pearls—also called karst pearls—that match the size, shape, and color of lotus seeds. Hanging Immortal Lotus: At the cave entrance, clusters of stalactites resemble lotus petals, creating the illusion of a massive lotus hanging dramatically from the cavern ceiling—an awe-inspiring sight often hailed as one of the world’s top natural wonders.

Twin Dragons Emerging from the Cave: About 100 meters into the cave, on either side of the walls, there are winding stone grooves that spiral down to the cave floor, resembling two dragons soaring out of the cave. Deep Pool and Giant Python: To the left of the Lotus Pond lies an unfathomably deep pool connected to a nearby river outside the cave, which never dries up year-round. Along the pool’s edge, stone markings include a deeply sunken groove shaped like a python, encrusted with small stones like scales, coiled around the pool.

The Origin of Lotus Cave

Before the 1960s, this cave was little known, as its entrance was so small that one had to crawl inside. Locals called it the “Crawling Cave.”

In 1964, after Comrade Tao Zhu of the Central-South Bureau visited Yangshuo, he decided to develop the picturesque region into the “Geneva of the East.” A team was dispatched to Yangshuo County to lead urban renovation efforts.
