natural rock cave. It is said to be the place where Cao Ye, a renowned poet from Yangshuo during the late Tang Dynasty, studied in his youth. In ancient times, there was a Ciguang Temple (also called Chengbei Temple) here, but it no longer exists. The Ming Dynasty scholar Xie Jin wrote a poem that says: "In the north of Yangshuo County stands Chengbei Temple, said to be where Cao Ye once lived. Over time, the temple fell into disuse, no monks remain, only the reading rock remains famous." (This poem is inscribed on the cliff in front of the cave.)

Nowadays, a Yangshuo Library has been built next to the cave, and a "Reading Pavilion" has been erected in the Peach and Plum Garden behind the hill. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Yangshuo. Cao Ye...

was a native of Yangshuo and a famous poet of the late Tang Dynasty. He passed the imperial examination in the fourth year of the Dazhong era (850 AD) during the Tang Dynasty, becoming the first person from northeastern Guangxi to achieve this honor. He once served as an official in the Sacrificial Worship Department and retired to his hometown in his later years, living a life of "sweeping leaves, brewing tea, and writing on leaves." Reading Rock was where he studied as a child.
