Ancient Stone City

The Ancient Stone City is located between Meiling in Putao Town, Yangshuo, 25 kilometers from downtown Yangshuo and 7.5 kilometers from National Highway 321 — the Guiyang Highway, which has been upgraded to a fourth-grade road. Surrounded by mountains and situated in a strategic location, it has been a contested military stronghold since ancient times. After Emperor Qin Shi Huang conquered the Lingnan region, in order to consolidate his rule, he mobilized skilled craftsmen from Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Guangxi, who spent several years building this city.

The Ancient Stone City has four main gates — east, south, west, and north. Beyond each gate lie 24 smaller gates scattered like stars, all connected to the city walls and stretching for dozens of kilometers. The eastern gate is reached by ascending 999 steps and features a uniquely structured and spectacular view, constructed entirely from strip-shaped slab stones without the use of mortar. Despite over two thousand years of change, countless battles, and the passage of time, it remains intact and as solid as ever — a true testament to the ingenuity of the ancestors of China. The southern gate enjoys a spring-like climate all year round, offering a refreshing and pleasant atmosphere, and is said to hold hidden treasures. The western gate sits at a perilous pass, famously described as “one man can hold it against ten thousand.” The northern gate overlooks the scenery of the back mountains, standing proudly on its own.
