Shutong Mountain

Located at the confluence of Tianjia River and the Li River in the southeast of Yangshuo County, about 2 kilometers from the county town. On the right side of the Li River, the mountain stands tall and graceful, making it the most delicate and charming peak along the Li River.

Shutong Mountain is no more than a hundred meters high. From a distance, it resembles a graceful maiden standing alone by the river, while up close, a large upright rock separates from the main body midway up the mountain, looking like an ancient boy holding a book and reading—hence the name Shutong Mountain (Book Boy Mountain). It is also known as Weigan Mountain (Mast Mountain) because its cylindrical shape resembles a ship’s mast.

To the east of Shutong Mountain stands a peak shaped like an inverted writing brush, called Zhuobi Peak, known as “the writing brush peak standing at the desk.” To the south lies Jigong Mountain, which strikingly resembles a rooster heralding the dawn, giving rise to the saying “the book boy listens to the rooster’s crow and reads.” In addition, nearby peaks such as Lingren Mountain and Thumb Peak can also be visited. Legend has it that long ago, a flood dragon often appeared in the Li River, harming the local people. A book boy obtained a heavenly book capable of subduing demons from his teacher, the God of Literature. He used the book to tame the dragon, which immediately collapsed into the water upon seeing the book. Fearing the dragon was only pretending to be dead, the book boy turned into a mountain while holding the heavenly book, forever standing by the Li River to protect the local residents.

By car: Drive along Qixing Road → Guimo Avenue → Provincial Highway 201, then enter National Highway 321. Continue along National Highway 321 to reach the destination.
