Xingping Old Street

Xingping Ancient Street is a flagstone-paved street stretching over 1 kilometer. Extending from the southeast of the ancient town to Rongshu Pool by the Li River and the historic ferry terminal, it facilitated movement for residents and merchants. Guildhalls from various provinces were built along both sides of the old street, and most of the brick-and-tile structures still remain well-preserved today. To the southeast of the ancient street lies Shizi Dan, the site of the former Xiping County seat. The outline of the old city walls can still be clearly seen, and fragments of ancient bricks, tiles, and ceramics are scattered throughout. What was once a bustling county town “with horses and carts passing by and people watching people” now exudes a serene atmosphere surrounded by quiet green hills and just a few village houses. Interestingly, an ancient banyan tree said to have been planted when the county was founded – so large that it takes eight people to encircle its trunk – still thrives, with its roots having grown around and seemingly swallowed five Buddha statues and a massive rock weighing about 20 tons. It’s as if the tree itself is narrating the over 1,730 years of historical changes in this ancient town.
