Bilian Cave is a typical karst landform, running through the entire Zhongling Mountain. It is a multi-level cave system, featuring stalactites formed in different geological periods. These formations come in bizarre and diverse shapes, crystal-clear as if a galaxy from the night sky has poured down, twinkling like stars. The marvels of nature are displayed here in their most spectacular form. At the same time, the Bilian Cave scenic area combines natural and cultural landscapes. The elegant Little Green Mountain, lush forests, and the fragrance of flowers and birdsong create an idyllic natural setting that captivates visitors. Moreover, the legendary tales of Xu Xiake, the Ming Dynasty geographer, add a rich humanistic charm to the site.

Xu Xiake, the great geographer, traveler, and explorer of the Ming Dynasty, discovered a magical and spiritually rich cave—Bilian Cave—during his travels in Yangshuo. He inscribed the words “The cave has eight entrances, interconnected and gracefully winding,” which are carved inside the cave. Bilian Cave is located within Zhongling Mountain in Yangshuo Park. The mountain is named Zhongling (Bell Spirit) because its shape resembles a bell, and there is also a stone bell inside the cave. Legend also says that Chen Tuan, the patriarch of Taoism, once cultivated immortality here. The locals worshipped him, and many believed his presence brought miraculous effects, hence the mountain is also called Chen Tuan Mountain. The entire mountain features over twenty large and small caves, all interconnected and layered across nine levels like ascending clouds. With hundreds of uniquely shaped stone lotuses inside, it is named Bilian Cave (Lotus Cave). Locals in Yangshuo call it Dragon Cave, with the legend saying that two divine dragons from the Li River wandered into the cave, where they were mesmerized by the countless stone lotuses, pillars, and stalagmites—nature’s miraculous spectacle. They were so captivated that they left their true forms behind in Bilian Cave.
