Mingxiu Garden

Mingxiu Garden is a cultural relic protection unit of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Introduction: One of Guangxi’s three famous gardens, located on the western side of Wuming County, 38 kilometers from Nanning. Surrounded by water on three sides and shaped like a gourd-shaped peninsula, Mingxiu Garden covers a total area of 28,000 square meters. Originally the garden of Liang, a scholar from the Qing Dynasty’s late gentry class, it was called Fuchun Garden. In the early years of the Republic of China, Lu Rongting, the Commander-in-Chief of the Two Guangs and General of Glorious Martial Might, purchased the garden and renamed it Mingxiu Garden. The garden is rich in historical sites and steeped in heritage, featuring detailed texts and images that explain the origins of Guangxi’s first motorable road, the development of the Zhuang script, and the historical background of Nanning becoming the capital of Guangxi. Chunxia Garden, Qiuxia Garden, and Mingxiu Garden face each other across the river, forming a triangular layout, together making up a comprehensive tourist area integrating vacationing, sightseeing, and folk culture entertainment. The scenic area boasts ancient trees towering overhead, uniquely shaped rocks, crisscrossing paths, pavilions in harmony with their surroundings, and a tranquil atmosphere. To the right along the riverbank, there is a century-old grove of lychee trees, beneath which stone tables and benches are set up for visitors to rest. On the left riverbank stands the He Guan Pavilion, later renamed Zhi Zhi Pavilion, where visitors can admire blooming lotus flowers and watch goldfish swim. The Dongtian Pavilion stands atop a rocky outcrop, a six-sided wooden structure with upturned eaves and a pointed roof, nestled among green foliage, making it especially picturesque. Climbing up to the arched stone gateway and leaning on the railing, you can take in a sweeping view of the river like a jade ribbon, lush forests, rows of buildings, and the beautiful southern scenery. Related Knowledge: In the early years of the Republic of China, key figures such as Hu Hanmin and Zhang Taiyan, along with Liang Qichao, visited the garden to discuss anti-Yuan Shikai strategies with Lu Rongting. During the Anti-Japanese War, Bai Chongxi established the headquarters of the National Government's 16th Army Group in the garden. In the early post-liberation period, a team of experts led by Professor Yuan Jiahua from Peking University created the romanized Zhuang script in the garden, turning it into the office where the Zhuang script was developed—Zhuang writing was born in Mingxiu Garden.
