Pumiao Bridge

Originally named Yongning Yongjiang Bridge, it was a key project of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Nanning City, and was included in the “Eighth Five-Year Plan” joint scientific and technological research program of the Ministry of Transport of China. The bridge is situated on Caihong South Road in Pumiao, Yongning District, connecting to Caihong Road in Mo Village, Qingxiu District to the north, linking to Yongheng Highway to the west, and integrating with the southeastern Guangxi highway network. It serves as an important piece of infrastructure for facilitating the maritime gateway of southwestern China and boosting the economic development of Guangxi.

The bridge is a through-arch structure with a main span of 312 meters. Its structure consists of two parallel steel-concrete box-section arch ribs, each 3.0–4.0 meters wide and 5.0–6.8 meters high, with a rise of 52 meters and a rise-to-span ratio of 1:6. At the time of its completion, its span ranked first in the world among similar bridges. The approach spans consist of two sets of four 16-meter pre-stressed U-shaped hollow slabs. The total length of the bridge is 458.4 meters. The driving lanes are 12 meters wide, with sidewalks on each side measuring 2 × 3.45 meters, bringing the total width of the bridge deck to 18.9 meters. The longitudinal slope is 2%. The design load capacity includes: Class 20 overloaded vehicles; Guangxi vehicle Class 120; and pedestrian load of 3.5 kN/m². The design flood frequency is P=1%. The designed navigable water level is H—71.46 meters, with a navigable clearance height of 250 × 10 meters. The bridge was designed by the Engineering Design Institute of the Armed Police Traffic Command, constructed by the Second Engineering Division of the Guangxi Highway & Bridge Engineering Corporation, commenced in January 1993, completed in August 1996, and opened to traffic in September of the same year, with a total investment of 60 million yuan. Initially named Yongning Yongjiang Bridge, it was renamed to its current name in September 2005.

The bridge features a novel structure and advanced technology, incorporating a series of cutting-edge design and construction methods along with the latest scientific achievements. Its elegant appearance, painted in vibrant colors, gives off a dazzling glow and resembles a rainbow after the rain when viewed from afar—this inspired the renaming of Pumiao Construction Road to Caihong (Rainbow) South Road. It is one of the iconic bridges in downtown Nanning. From the bridge, visitors can admire its majestic structure and the beautiful scenery of Pumiao, leaving many travelers in awe and reluctant to leave.
