The Yue Dong Guild Hall is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Yue Dong Guild Hall was funded and built by merchants from Guangdong. Construction began in the 59th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1721), and it has been renovated multiple times since. Whenever merchants from Guangdong came to Baise, they preferred to stay at, gather at, or conduct business negotiations at the Yue Dong Guild Hall.

The Yue Dong Guild Hall is an ancient building constructed of brick and wood, embodying the artistic traditions and styles of classical southern Chinese architecture. Located on Jiefang Pedestrian Street in Baise City, the entire structure covers a land area of 2,331 square meters and a floor area of 2,661 square meters.

The guild hall faces east and is backed by the west, with its main axis formed by three major halls—front, middle, and rear. On both sides, it is flanked by four symmetrical wing rooms and corridors (pronounced “wǔ”), forming a closed, independent architectural complex laid out in the shape of the Chinese character “日” (sun/day). The halls and corridors feature a rigorous layout. Courtyard walkways are paved with red bricks and rectangular flagstones. The hallways and verandas are supported entirely by large solid wooden pillars or square granite stone columns. The inner gable walls of the three central main halls still preserve exquisitely fine ink-wash murals in remarkably good condition. It can be said that the entire building is a fine masterpiece of cultural, educational, and artistic heritage.

On December 11, 1929, Comrade Deng Xiaoping successfully led the Baise Uprising, during which the Seventh Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was established in Baise. Its headquarters and political department were set up there. Departments under the headquarters—including the staff office, supply office, adjutant office, and medical office—were all located and operated within the Yue Dong Guild Hall. The offices and living quarters of Deng Xiaoping and Zhang Yunyi were extremely simple, each furnished with just a desk and a bed, and they often worked while sitting on the bed. Their beds were built using pine planks and long benches. They wore the same clothes, used the same bedding, and ate the same meals as other officers and soldiers, setting an exemplary model of hard struggle for the entire army.

Zhang Yunyi (1892–1974): Member of the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, Marshal of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, proletarian revolutionary, and military strategist. His original name was Zhang Yun Yi, also known as Zhang Sheng Zhi. He was from Shang Liao Village, Touyuan Town. Born into a poor farming family, he entered the village private school at age 7, studied diligently, and consistently ranked at the top of his class. After graduating from elementary school, due to financial constraints, he could not continue his studies. To make a living, he went to Guangzhou to rely on a fellow villager, Zhao Shihuai, who was an officer, and worked as a handyman.
