Baima Shuangying

Located in Baima Wei, Danzhu Town, there are two buildings that commemorate local historical figures—one is the Zhuangyuan Memorial Hall dedicated to Liang Song, and the other is the “Commander of the Three Borders Archway” commemorating national hero Yuan Chonghuan. Together, they are called Baima Shuangying.

Liang Song was from Longjie in Penghua Li, Pingnan (now Dapeng Town). He achieved the title of Zhuangyuan (top imperial scholar) in the first year of the Baolong era (925) of the Southern Han Dynasty. Later, dissatisfied with the court, he resigned and returned to his hometown, where he successfully petitioned for a one-year tax exemption for the people of Gongzhou. Tragically,

he drowned in the floodwaters while crossing the Donghao River mouth on horseback. To show their gratitude, the people of Pingnan built a Zhuangyuan Temple in Baima Wei. The stele corridor houses his poem “Lychee Poem,” written when he became Zhuangyuan, and “On Behalf of My Mother, Composed as She Waits at the Door for Her Son,” written when he resigned from office.

The “Commander of the Three Borders Archway,” built in honor of Yuan Chonghuan, stands

13.38 meters tall. The archway features antique-patterned engravings, exuding grandeur and solemnity. The building atop the Xitang Wharf in Baima Wei was once Yuan Chonghuan’s former residence. A native of Dongguan, Guangdong, who also held Pingnan roots, Yuan Chonghuan had already passed the imperial examination to become a Jinshi (advanced scholar). During a time of foreign invasion and national crisis, he put down his pen to take up arms and devoted himself to serving his country. Later, he fell victim to political persecution, but his patriotism has inspired generations of people in Gongzhou.

Danzhu Town: Danzhu Town has a long history. According to the Pingnan County Annals, from the second to the twelfth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, it served as the seat of Qinchuan County. During the Republican era, it was known as Beiyi District or Danzhu Port. In January 1950, when the People’s Government of Pingnan County was established, it was called Danzhu District. In September 1984, it was named Danzhu Town. The town currently administers eight villages and one street, and is one of Guangxi’s key towns.

Danzhu Town is located on the north bank of the Xijiang River in the eastern part of Pingnan County, covering a total area of 94.34 square kilometers.
