Qu Li Dam

Qu Li Dam in Sanrong Village, Dazhou Town, has stood for over 500 years since its construction during the Ming Dynasty’s Tian Shun era. It has long protected the farmlands of nearby villages such as Gucheng, Tongde, and Luoming, earning the titles “Guardian of the Farmland” and “Watchman of Ancient Agriculture” in Dazhou Town.

The dam’s ability to endure centuries of flooding is closely tied to its advanced engineering. It intercepts the river at an angle, resembling a “bent plow”—with the plowtail positioned upstream on the southwest bank of the river and the plowhead downstream on the northeast bank, reducing resistance when floods occur. Moreover, the dam site was chosen wisely, with the foundation cleared down to bedrock, and the slope of the dam is well-balanced. When floodwaters pass over the dam, they do not erode its base. These techniques remain highly instructive for modern hydraulic engineering projects.
