Liang Song, a native of Gongzhou (now Pingnan, Guangxi). His courtesy names were Zigao and Zhongqiu. His birth and death dates are unknown. He was the top scholar (Zhuangyuan) in the Bai Long first year (925) of the Southern Han Dynasty during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

Liang Song was diligent and studious from a young age, excelling in poetry and prose. Emperor Liu Yan of Southern Han, emulating the Tang system, initiated the imperial examination for the Ji You year in Guangzhou. During the palace examination, Liang Song composed the poem “Ode to Lychees”: “Dew wets rouge cheeks, bright before the eyes; / A thousand layers of red robe hard to portray. / Fair ladies savor all the dainties on the plate, / Yet Heaven favors those born beyond the hills. / Oranges and pomelos, ashamed, lag on tribute lists; / Salt and plums should blend in harmony’s bowl. / If the Golden Gate has soil to nurture talent, / You must claim the foremost place under the skies.” The emperor was impressed and named him the top scholar. … More details about Liang Song ++
