Meng De'en (1806–1861), born in Malin Village, Huawangshui, Dapeng, Pingnan County, Guangxi. He was born in 1806 (the 11th year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty). His original name was Shangsheng, but it was changed to Desheng because it violated the taboo of the Heavenly Father’s name, and later changed again to De'en because the character "Tian" (Heaven) was deemed too exalted. De'en’s grandfather owned farmland equivalent to three dan of grain seeds, seven or eight plowing oxen, and harvested about ten thousand jin of rice annually, making him a well-off farmer. His father and his two brothers divided the family property, but his father became addicted to opium and had squandered nearly all the family wealth by the time of his death.
