Monument to Martyr Deng Pei

The Monument to Martyr Deng Pei is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

To commemorate Deng Pei, an early Communist and outstanding leader of the labor movement, the CPC Sanshui District (County) Committee and the District (County) Government allocated a special fund of 190,000 yuan to erect a bronze statue of Deng Pei in September 1990. The statue stands upright, with a height of 3.2 meters. The background features waist-high ruined walls, symbolizing “contemplation amidst ruins.” The statue’s pedestal is a cube made of granite, shaped like a tower with three levels. The front of the top level is 2.14 meters wide, the sides are 1.24 meters wide, and the height is 2.7 meters. The front is inscribed with four gold-plated Chinese characters “Martyr Deng Pei,” written by Peng Zhen, former Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The back is inscribed with the gold-plated “Brief Biography of Deng Pei.” The middle level is 3.14 meters wide at the front, 2.24 meters at the sides, and 0.2 meters high. The bottom level is 4.14 meters wide at the front, 3.24 meters at the sides, and 0.2 meters high. The base is surrounded by a flower bed that is 9 meters long and 7 meters wide, enclosed by iron railings. The site covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters, with a built-up area of about 1,000 square meters. On May 30, 1994, it was designated as a municipal-level key cultural relics protection unit by the Sanshui City Cultural Bureau.

Deng Pei (1883–1927) was a founding member of the Communist Party of China, an outstanding representative of the Chinese working class, and a prominent leader and activist in the early labor movement. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions to China’s revolutionary cause, especially the early railway workers’ movement.

Deng Pei, originally named Pei’an and styled Shaoshan, was from Dengguan Village, Shipuzhou, Southwest District. Orphaned at a young age, he relied on his mother’s meager farming income and managed to attend private school for four years.
