The Memorial Shrine of Martyr Li Binghui

The Memorial Shrine of Martyr Li Binghui is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.

In 1934, the local villagers of Pinggang Village, the hometown of Martyr Li Binghui, built a memorial shrine next to his former residence. At that time, Lin Sen, then Chairman of the Nationalist Government, personally inscribed the horizontal plaque reading “The Memorial Shrine of Martyr Li Binghui,” which was hung prominently above the entrance. On both sides of the main gate were couplets that read: “His noble spirit flows eternal, leaving a legacy for a hundred generations; his revolutionary achievements endure, honored through the ages.”

Inside the shrine, there were display niches and cabinets, in which hung the portrait of Martyr Li Binghui. On both sides of the portrait were couplets that read: “Though he has passed, his name lives on, renowned through the ages; having fulfilled his mission, he smiles in peace in the netherworld,” with the horizontal inscription reading “The World Belongs to All.” In 1989, the People’s Government of Fengkai County allocated special funds to restore the shrine to its original appearance, designating it as a patriotic education base.

In July 2005, the party and government departments of Zhaoqing City and Fengkai County fully protected and utilized historical and cultural resources. Protective and restoration measures were taken for the Memorial Shrine of Martyr Li Binghui and its surrounding environment. Funding was allocated for renovation projects, including the restoration of the Memorial Shrine of Martyr Li Binghui, the former residence of Li Binghui, the Li Binghui Memorial Hall, and the beautification of landscapes such as the “Songbai Mountain Villa.” Together with the century-old street, the ancient Taixin Bridge, and the ecological village, they formed an ecological, cultural, and leisure tourism corridor in the Pinggang Revolutionary Base Area.

Li Binghui, also known as ZuKui and by the alias Ludesi, was of Han ethnicity and from Zhaoqing, Guangdong. In his early years, he traveled to Taiping (now in Malaysia), where he attended an English school run by a church. He was later sent by the school to study at a school in Malacca and joined the Jesuit order, being assigned to work at the Anglican Church in Singapore. Later, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) and was passionate about promoting the revolution. On April 27, 1911, he participated in the Guangzhou Uprising (also known as the Huanghuagang Uprising), following Huang Xing in the attack on the Viceroyalty of Liangguang headquarters, and died in battle on Gaodi Street. He was buried in Huanghuagang, Guangzhou, and is one of the Seventy-Two Martyrs.
