Dongzhongyan Site

The Dongzhongyan Site is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Dongzhongyan Site is located north of Heerkou Village, Yulao Town, Fengkai County, with the cave entrance at a relative elevation of 15 meters. It dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Age. Uranium series dating indicates an age of 148,000 ± 13,000 years. Discovered in 1978 and excavated in 1989, the site covers an area of 12 square meters with a sediment accumulation of 2 meters thick. In the concretionary deposits of the left branch of the cave, two human tooth fossils were unearthed. These fossils are robust in morphology, featuring numerous grooves and small ridges, indicating a more primitive nature, and are classified as belonging to early Homo sapiens. The associated fauna includes six orders and 24 species, most of which are identical to those of the Maba Man fauna, reflecting that the region’s ecological environment at the time featured lush forests, abundant water plants, a warm and humid climate, and conditions suitable for human habitation.

In 2008, the People's Government of Guangdong Province designated it as part of the Fifth Batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Yulao Town: Yulao Town is situated in the central part of Fengkai County, approximately 50 kilometers from Jiangkou Town, the county seat. It serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of central Fengkai County and is among the first group of central towns in the province. The town covers a total area of 118 square kilometers, with a population of about 21,000. It governs 9 village committees, 1 community residents' committee, and a total of 181 villager groups. The mountainous area spans 112,000 mu, and the arable land covers 15,900 mu, including 13,800 mu of paddy fields.
