Tomb of Mo Xuanqing

The Tomb of Mo Xuanqing is a cultural relic protection unit of Fengkai County.

The Tomb of Mo Xuanqing is located on Luogugang in Yulao Town, Fengkai County. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, it has been renovated in subsequent dynasties. The tomb faces southwest and is shaped like a grandmaster’s chair. The central gravestone is 86 cm high and 40 cm wide, inscribed with “Tomb of Lord Mo Xuanqing, the Tang Dynasty’s Imperial Scholar.” In front of the gravestone is a worship platform, and the tomb site covers approximately 100 square meters in total. In 1988, his descendants and various individuals donated funds for its renovation. A brick-and-stone memorial archway was constructed in the style of four pillars, three bays, and three stories, with side rooms on both sides. The archway bears the horizontal inscription “Tomb Garden of Mo Xuanqing, the First Imperial Scholar of Lingnan.”

Mo Xuanqing, courtesy name Zhongjie, was a native of Wende Township. He lost his father at a young age and moved with his mother, Lady Liang, to Kaijian (now Jinlou Village, Nanfeng Town) after her remarriage. In the fifth year of the Dazhong era (851 AD) during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, he became the top imperial scholar at the age of seventeen, the first from both Guangdong and Guangxi. Initially, Mo Xuanqing stayed in the capital and joined the Hanlin Academy, later being appointed as the Biejia (a fourth-rank official) of Taizhou (now Zhejiang Province). Unfortunately, he died before taking up the post. He authored the “Poetry Collection of Mo Xuanqing,” which has unfortunately been lost. Only around ten of his poems can be found in works such as the “Complete Tang Poems,” “Guangdong Poetry Collection,” “Fengchuan County Annals,” and “Kaixian County Annals.”

In 1993, the Fengkai County People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.

Yulao Town: Located in the central part of Fengkai County, Yulao Town is about 50 kilometers from Jiangkou Town, the county seat. It serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of central Fengkai County and is one of the province’s first batch of central towns. The town covers a total area of 118 square kilometers, with a population of approximately 21,000. It administers nine village committees, one community residents' committee, and a total of 181 villager groups. The mountainous area spans 112,000 mu, and the cultivated land area is 15,900 mu, including 13,800 mu of paddy fields.
