Xiangyin Wenxing Pagoda

Xiangyin Wenxing Pagoda is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

Xiangyin Wenxing Pagoda is an ancient architectural landmark as renowned as the Xiangyin Confucius Temple. Originally built during the Song and Yuan dynasties in Bajiao Street, east of Xiangyin County, the pagoda later collapsed. In the 50th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1785), Magistrate Li Bing oversaw its reconstruction.

The pagoda is constructed from square-hewn bluestone blocks laid flat and tapered upward at an incline, reaching a total height of 31 meters. The base stands 0.84 meters high with sides measuring 4.34 meters, covering a ground area of 88.4 square meters. It has seven stories and eight sides, with four arched doorways alternately arranged on each level. The structure features upturned eaves and is hollow inside, containing a spiral stone staircase with 49 steps. The first level houses a stone stele inscribed with the words “Kejia Chanlian” (Successive Academic Honors), engraved with an inscription by Magistrate Li Bing. The spire consists of three cast iron spheres stacked atop one another. The spire shaft runs through the center, supported by a base that rests on the top platform of the pagoda, creating a well-proportioned, exquisitely beautiful overall structure. “The deity Kuixing is molded at the top, enclosed within walls and railings for stability,” hence the pagoda is also known as “Kuixing Pagoda.”
