Tianfei Mountain Cliff Carvings

The Tianfei Mountain Cliff Carvings are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

The Tianfei Mountain Cliff Carvings are located in Yujiazhai, Qingquan Village, Xujia Cave Town, Suxian District. The village features red cliffs and lush bamboo, with reddish-brown stone walls forming the imposing gates of the stronghold. Over 40 cliff inscriptions are carved into the sheer cliffs facing the deep valley. The earliest inscriptions date back to the Jiajing Dingji year of the Ming Dynasty. Among them, in the winter of the Jiajing Dingji year of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Yan from Putian wrote “A Marvelous Journey in the Southern Land,” Gao Zhong from Guizhou inscribed “Majestic Clouds and Rosy Mist,” while during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, Wang Jiandong from Guilin and Xu Biao from Weiyang inscribed “A Place to Explore the Wonders,” and Chen Bangqi wrote “The Virtuous Enjoy Longevity.” These historical inscriptions showcase a variety of calligraphic styles including regular script, running script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script. The strokes are vigorous and the compositions bold, with characters as large as a dou (a traditional Chinese measure) and as small as a fly. They can be described as “like dragons flying and phoenixes dancing, a scene of boundless wonder.” Behind Yujiazhai, there is a natural stone cave about thirty meters high and twenty meters wide, shaped like an arch bridge. On the stone walls on either side of the cave entrance are inscribed the eight large characters “Heaven’s Natural Eye” and “The Land’s Great Span.” The Tianfei Mountain Cliff Carvings group at Yujiazhai holds significant historical and artistic value. It was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites in 2011.
