The former site of the 711 Meritorious Uranium Mine of the Nuclear Industry is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of the 711 Meritorious Uranium Mine of the Nuclear Industry is located in Suxian District and is the first large-scale uranium mine discovered and explored in China, as well as one of the country’s largest uranium mines. On September 1, 1960, the first phase of construction at China’s first uranium mine—the 711 Mine—was successfully completed, providing qualified raw materials for the first [atomic bomb], and was hailed by Liu Jie, the then Minister of the Second Ministry of Machinery Industry, as “China’s No. 1 Meritorious Uranium Mine of the Nuclear Industry.”

On October 7, 2019, the former site of the 711 Meritorious Uranium Mine of the Nuclear Industry was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

In 1949, it belonged to Yongfeng Township of Chenzhou County; in 1956, Xujia Cave Township was established; in 1958, it was incorporated into the Suburban People's Commune; in 1961, Xujia Cave Commune was split off; and in 1983, it was upgraded to a town. Located in the northeastern part of the urban area, it covers an area of 60.3 square kilometers and has a population of 18,000.
