Peng Yulin (1816–1890) was a general of the Xiang Army during the Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Xueqin. He was originally from Zhajiang in Hengyang but was born in Anqing, Anhui. In the 12th year of the Daoguang reign (1832), he returned to his ancestral home with his father. In 1853, he assisted Zeng Guofan in establishing the Xiang Army navy, later taking charge of it, purchasing foreign artillery, and building large ships. The following year, he achieved consecutive victories against the Taiping Army navy in Wuhan and Tianjiazhen, Hubei. In early 1855, he was defeated by Shi Dakai at Hukou, Jiangxi. Later, he focused on expanding the army, gradually gaining control over the Yangtze River waters, and participated in the sieges of Jiujiang and Anqing. In 1861, he was promoted to Navy Admiral. In 1883, he served as Minister of War and was ordered to go to Guangdong to oversee defense preparations. Later, due to illness, he resigned and returned to his hometown. In the 16th year of the Guangxu reign, he passed away at his residence on the eastern bank of the Xiang River in Hengyang. The Qing court posthumously awarded him the title of Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent and conferred upon him the posthumous name “Gangzhi” (Staunch and Upright), and also built a memorial shrine for him. In his spare time from military affairs, Peng Yulin also painted and wrote poetry, gaining fame particularly for his paintings of plum blossoms. His poems were later compiled and published under the title “Poetry Collection of Peng Gangzhi.”
