Former Site of the Third Provincial Girls' Normal School of Hunan Province

The former site of the Third Provincial Girls' Normal School of Hunan Province is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The former site of the Third Provincial Girls' Normal School of Hunan Province, abbreviated as "San Nü Shi" (Third Girls' School), was established in the autumn of 1912. Initially, several public mansions on the east bank of the river were used as temporary school buildings, with Kang Hesheng serving as its first principal. In 1914, a new brick-and-wood structure school building was completed at Hehuaping in Zoujiamatou, featuring an auditorium, four rows of two-story classrooms, and other living facilities. An affiliated elementary school was located in the northwest corner, and the campus covered an area of 80 mu. In September 1926, it was renamed the "Third Provincial Junior High School." In 1928, it was called the "Sixth Provincial High School." In 1934, it became the "Provincial Hengyang Girls' High School." After 1938, it was relocated successively to Zhajiang in Hengyang County, Liaojian in Zixing County, and Yongxing County. Only ruins of the San Nü Shi site at Hehuaping remain today, now the location of the "Hengyang Construction Machinery Factory." The ancient camphor tree that once stood on the original school grounds still remains, standing tall and vigorous.

San Nü Shi was a school with a proud revolutionary tradition and served as a major hub of activity for the Communist movement in southern Hunan. After the May Fourth Movement, Mao Zedong came here to promote Marxism-Leninism, develop party and league organizations, and train a group of revolutionary activists. Notable figures include He Baozhen, Wu Ruolan, Mao Zehjian, Xia Minghan, Bu Renzhen, Zhu Jinzhi, Zeng Zhi, and Peng Jingqiu.
