Memorial Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Lixian County

The Memorial Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Lixian County is a Lixian County cultural relic protection unit, a classic red tourism site, and a patriotic education base.

The Memorial Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Lixian County is located on the south bank of the Lanjiang River within Lanjiang Park, on the southern side of Jiefang Middle Road in the county seat of Lixian County, Changde City.

In 1984, the CPC Lixian County Committee and the People’s Government of Lixian County, in line with the spirit of Proposals No. 269 and No. 272 submitted to the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in 1980 by Zhang De (former commander of the Wuhan Garrison Command), a veteran Red Army soldier and member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and in response to the requests of local veterans, officials, and residents, decided to build the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument to commemorate the fallen, inspire future generations, and carry forward their legacy.

The monument’s foundation stone was laid on July 30, 1984, and it was completed and unveiled on April 5 of the following year (Tomb-Sweeping Day).

The Revolutionary Martyrs Monument is solemn and majestic, with a unique design. It covers an area of 160 square meters, with a building area of 100 square meters. The main body of the monument is made of reinforced concrete, sitting on a hexagonal base that is 1.5 meters high and approximately 70 square meters in area. Each of the three sides of the base has a nine-step staircase, and the edge of the base is lined with cement slab benches serving as a railing. The interior of the base is open and houses two specially made “Dragon Measure Jars,” which contain the remains of martyrs relocated from Pengshan, Taohuatan, and other locations. The main body of the monument is a three-faced, folded pyramid shape, with each face being 2 meters wide. The interior folds into six faces, each 1.2 meters wide. At the top of the monument stands a 2-meter-tall soldier figure blowing a bugle. The total height of the monument is 28.9 meters. The inscription on the front of the monument, “Memorial Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs,” was written in September 1984 by Wang Shoudao, Standing Committee Member of the Central Advisory Commission of the CPC. The inscriptions on the two sides, “Revolutionary Martyrs Live Forever,” were penned by Yan Jialong, a calligrapher from Hunan.

The Memorial Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Lixian County was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Lixian County in December 1991, and as a patriotic education base of Changde City by the Publicity Department of the CPC Changde Municipal Committee in November 1995.
