Tomb of Chen Shuxiang

The Tomb of Chen Shuxiang is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The Tomb of Chen Shuxiang is located to the south of Yinyang Village in Chengzhong Community by the Xiaoshui River in Dao County, Hunan Province. In late November 1934, Chen Shuxiang led the 34th Red Army Division to cover the strategic retreat of the Central Red Army. While leading his troops in a breakout attempt, he was shot in the abdomen and sustained serious injuries. Eventually, his unit ran out of ammunition and support, and Chen Shuxiang, severely wounded, was captured. While being escorted, he took advantage of a moment when the guards were not looking, and on the stretcher, enduring immense pain, he pulled out his own intestines from the wound and twisted them off, dying a heroic death. After Chen Shuxiang’s sacrifice, the local people, deeply moved by his bravery, secretly buried him and his guard’s remains by the Xiaoshui River at night, at the current location south of Yinyang Village in Chengzhong Community.
