Former Residence of Wan Danping

The former residence of Wan Danping is a classic red tourism site and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Wan Danping is located in Wan Danping Village, Baisha Town, Xinning County, Shaoyang City.

Wan Danping was born on December 27, 1900, into a peasant family in Wanjiacha, Xichong Township, Xinning County, Hunan Province. He later enrolled at Yiyun Middle School in Changsha. Under the guidance and education of Mao Zedong, He Shuheng, Xia Minghan, and others, Wan Danping joined the Communist Party of China. In 1924, he was recommended by the CPC Hunan Regional Committee to study at the second term of the Whampoa Military Academy. After graduating from the academy, Wan Danping participated in the Eastern Expedition and the Northern Expedition. He once served as a battalion commander in the 24th Regiment of the 11th Army of the National Revolutionary Army in Wuhan and took part in the Nanchang Uprising. In May 1929, Wan Danping was ordered to leave Shanghai for work in Guangxi. Following the instructions of Deng Xiaoping and Zhang Yunyi, special envoys of the CPC Central Committee, he actively planned the Longzhou Armed Uprising together with Yu Zuoyu and others, serving as Chief of Staff of the 2nd Brigade and Commander of the 2nd Regiment. On February 1, 1930, the 8th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and the Revolutionary Committee of the Zujiang Region were established in Longzhou. Wan Danping served as Chief of Staff of the Red 8th Army and Commander of the 2nd Column, while also being a member of the Red 8th Army Military Committee. On March 20, during a memorial service for martyr He Jiannan held at Xintiandi Square, the Longzhou military and civilians were suddenly attacked by the forces of Liang Chaoji, a warlord of the Guangxi Clique. Wan Danping led the 2nd Column in fierce combat against the enemy. Outnumbered, the Red Army decided to abandon Longzhou City, with Wan Danping commanding a battalion to hold the Iron Bridge and cover the Red Army’s retreat toward Pingxiang. He ordered the battalion commander to stretch forces along the river to defend the bank, while he personally led the 2nd Company to guard the Iron Bridge—the main passage connecting northern and southern Longzhou—repelling repeated frenzied attacks from Liang Chaoji’s forces from morning until night, successfully completing the mission of blocking the enemy. However, he, the Chief of Staff of the Red 8th Army, was struck by enemy bullets and shed his last drop of blood on the Iron Bridge for the revolution.

The former residence of Wan Danping is built with earthen bricks. Only one-third of the original structure remains. Due to severe roof leakage, the walls and foundation have been seriously damaged, with cracks present. The building also suffered a fire in the 1930s.

In February 2006, the former residence of Wan Danping was designated as a Shaoyang Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the Propaganda Department of the Shaoyang Municipal Committee.

Baisha Town: Feixianqiao Township, Baisha Town, and Jinshi Town — these one township and two towns were merged into the newly established Jinshi Town.

Baisha Town gets its name from the large Baisha Shoal on the banks of the Fuyi River within its territory. It is 10 kilometers from the county seat, nestled between mountains and water, with well-developed transportation. The Fuyi River and Provincial Highway S218, the region's two major "arteries," run through the entire town, dividing it into eastern and western sections along the river. Both the east and west sections basically have road access to every village, with a total village road length of 56 kilometers. The east and west sides are interconnected by S218 and the Xin-Gao Highway and its branches, forming a comprehensive traffic loop.
